Why didn’t any federal withholding tax come out of my paycheck?
The amount of federal income tax withheld from an employee’s paycheck is determined by prescribed formulas. These formulas take into account an employees wages, pay period, marital status, and withholding allowances. Employees provide their marital status and withholding allowances when they fill out form W4.
Does a 15-year-old need working papers?
Employees aged 14-17 do need working papers.
Are they limited to the number of hours they can work?
Employees aged 14-15 can work 7am-9pm. Employees aged 16-17 can work 5:30am-11pm. Outside of school these employees can work 8 hours a day-40 hours a week, over a 6-day period.
If an employee collects social security benefits, do they still have to have social security taxes deducted from their pay?
Yes. There is no FICA exemption for wages paid to aged workers. Wages are taxable regardless of the worker’s age or whether the worker is receiving social security benefits.
When can an employee claim no tax liability exemption?
An employee is exempt from federal income tax withholding if the employee certifies that they will have no federal income tax liability in the current taxable year. To make this claim the employee must also meet the following tests:
1. The employee must have had no tax liability in the prior year.
2. The employee must not be able to be claimed as a dependant on another person’s tax return.
3. The employee cannot have non-wage income: such as interest on savings, unless he expects his wages plus non-wage income to be less than $700.
Does CASA’s system currently interface with any time clocks?
Yes. CASA has several existing interfaces. In addition, we are more than willing to work with your time clock company to create an interface if one currently does not exist.
Do I need to have a minimum number of employees to use CASA's service?
No, our system has the flexibility to accommodate businesses with 1 employee, as well as those with over 1000 employees.
Can CASA block direct deposit on an employee for certain checks, or on a one time basis only?
Yes, you just need to let CASA know which employee and/or check that needs to be blocked.
If I am on vacation, can I have my checks signed and stuffed?
Yes, CASA can sign your checks, as long as you have given us a valid signature prior to going away.
How do I verify that a social security number is valid?
Go to www.ssa.gov and click on FAQs. Search for invalid social security numbers under the category social security cards and numbers. Or call 1-800-772-1213 ext.0.
